  • Sundays in May are made for hazy evening brewsky-and-beef barbecues with friends, right? Wrong! Sundays are for wigging out to psych-progsters Black Mountain. Fresh from tours with labelmate and alt.folk hero Bon Iver, and a slot at All Tomorrow’s Parties, Black Mountain take no prisoners with their distortion-laden rock epics.

Here’s a band unafraid to compose eight-minute songs (‘Tyrants’), which take listeners to the brink of apocalypse with their stampeding Sabbath-isms before bringing it right down again to sound like Led Zep at their most stoned (and if you think that sounds self-indulgent, wait till you cop a load of ‘Bright Lights’, which rages on for seventeen minutes).

On the flipside this Vancouver five-piece can also do moving, falsetto- driven Americana like ‘Stay Free’, which was picked up for the ‘Spider-Man 3’ soundtrack.

Touring in support of their recently released second album ‘In The Future’, Black Mountain by and large demand the sort of head movements that could warrant a chiropractor the following day. Support comes from noise psychedelics Awesome Color, a Michigan-born, Brooklyn-based trio who combine manic Stooges-inspired riffage with a ’90s lo-fi aesthetic.
