  • It seems like years since Friendly Fires first appeared on our radar, when in reality it’s only been about 18 months. Still, greater bands have spawned and died in that timeframe, and the punk-funk (or was it new rave?) scene the band were conveniently pinned to has since waned, but fortunately FF’s reputation was built on tunes and effervescence rather than membership of a particular club. Well, that and their frequently chaotic, largely ecstatic live shows.

Given their haircuts, the Fires are frequently described as ‘indie-dance’, but really, they’re a band who make dance music with some different implements. It’s the typical story – punky kids go to uni, take drugs and suddenly discover they like raving. But FF have assimilated this into their music rather than bolting it on.  In an era where the filtered house of Justice has opened the door to more painfully industrialised waves of noise, the Fires’  upbeat popsound may not be quite so ‘edgy’, but it’s still ace. Indeed, were they a bit more ‘conventionally attractive’, they could have had a great future with Lou Pearlman. Their long-awaited LP is dropping September, but the rapturous crowd at their Glastonbury set this year suggests a sizeable minority are already intimately familiar with the material.
