The Radio 3 Awards for World Music has established itself as the most significant event on the international musicological calendar. Like the Smash Hits Readers’ Poll used to be, but more foreign. And the traditional winner’s showcase is the world music world’s Poll Winners’ Party. This year, for the first time, this continent-spanning aural jamboree is a welcome addition to the Proms.
Of the six award-winners playing tonight, Cape Verdean newcomer Mayra Andrade (pictured) exemplifies the worldwide exchange of musics the occasion encourages, blending bluesy-jazzy morna with elements of African, Brazilian and Parisian jazz to create a distinct new-old sound. But the other sounds on offer are so diverse it’s odd to think that they fall into the same award-facilitating category at all. For example, Julden Camara, ably abetted by Robert Plant guitarist-Tinariwen producer Justin Adams, plies a hypnotic desert blues with a heavy Afrodelic edge – if it were 30 years older, Rough Trade punters would be all over it. There’s also supermodern Asian trip hop from ‘Chinese Björk’ Sa Dingding, whose ‘Qin Shing’ EP is also released this week. Plus two-time winner (Africa and Album of the Year) Bassekou Kouyate, will be rounding things off in fine, though more traditional, style. Well worth the effort – although if you fancy getting drunk and dancing around, you might prefer WOMAD, where the ushers are less intimidating.
