FaltyDL – 'Hardcourage'
- Rated as: 4/5
While we love The XX, it frustrates us that their tastemaking DJ and producer Jamie XX has yet to make a solo LP of his sparkling excursions into UK bass, as previously heard on remixes of Adele and Gil Scott-Heron. Maybe we should stop waiting when NYC producer FaltyDL – real name Drew Lustman – makes the hard job of presenting an eclectic and excellent dance music album look this easy.
We say ‘dance’. In fact, the mood here is often more tear-strewn and emotional than such an outmoded term suggests. The songs evoke the hazy memories of a rave rather than the music actually heard there. ‘Bells’ recalls the much-missed Boards Of Canada, while Ed Macfarlane from Friendly Fires lends the comedown flashback of ‘She Sleeps’ his own come-to-bed vocals. These ten tracks of dream-capturing disco are a delight, and prove this producer, though Falty by name, isn’t faulty by nature.
