  • Keisha Sugababe: interview

  • Interview by Eddy Lawrence

  • Keisha White is a member of popular combo Sugababes. Their new single, ‘Girls’, is out on September 29, and they play the Forum on October 1

  • They’re independent women
‘We’ve always had full creative control. Literally, 90 per cent of the stuff that you hear on our record comes from us. That’s why it’s always been quite hard for us going into the studio. It’s immense pressure when you’re writing your own stuff. Because when it’s done for you, there’s someone else to blame.’

    Keisha nearly ran for Brent

‘I’ve got a certificate for the long jump and the high jump. I loved it. I’m so unfit now, mind you. When do you ever see us really doing any dance routines? Ha ha! It’s hard – you can’t do the big routine and sing at the same time… well, you can do it, we’re just not very good at it. We did “Girls” for the first time on TV, and we had a routine to remember and we were shiteing ourselves. At the last minute we were like, “Forget the routine, let’s get the vocals right.” ’

She’s double-jointed in both her ears
‘I can actually tuck my ear inside my ear, so the whole thing is in my earhole. I know, it’s really weird, but it’s a comfort thing that I mastered the art of when I was two and a half. I remember being at nursery and they called my mum in. They didn’t wanna touch it in case there was something wrong with me. I’ve had to stop recently because my ears were getting lumpy. I went to the doctors and they were like, “OK, you’re starting to get cauliflower ear.” So I’ve tried to stop, but that’s made me wanna do it more.’

She’s got a crush on Simon Cowell
‘I thought it was a little crush, but it’s a big crush now. He’s really sexy. Every girl wants a guy they think they can tame. I thought I grew out of that, but with him, I’ve got this little thing.’

She’s still got all her girlhood dolls
‘I cannot part from them. I do not know why. You’d think I’d be able to give them to little cousins and stuff, or at least let them play with them when they come over, but no. There was one particular doll that I named Dominic, he had curly hair and everything, and the only thing that’s left of Dominic is his head, and I still will not throw him away.’

She had over 700 posters on her wall
‘My goal was to cover the ceiling, the walls and the inside of the door. I had everyone from TLC to Spice Girls to Brandy to Usher to Cleopatra. I was obsessed. Like, I was never really a big fan of ODB from the Wu-Tang Clan, but I remember there was a patch down at the bottom that needed a poster, so I put a picture of him there.’

She owns 200 pairs of shoes

‘I’ve made one of my bedrooms into a wardrobe. I do a clearout every six months, and it’s still full. And I can never find anything to wear! I work myself up into a frenzy and can’t ever decide . But I’ve definitely got a lot of options.’

She’s not a big Bobby Davro fan
‘My brother used to say to me [in ‘The Shining’ ‘red rum’-style voice] “Bobby Davro! Bobby Davro!”, and it used to scare the shit out of me. He used to do it to me all the time. I never knew who this man was . Then about four years ago I saw him for the first time, and I thought: Oh my God, that’s the person I was scared of. I was absolutely petrified. To be honest with you, if I’d have seen his face before, it would have a made a little bit more sense.’

She’s not a big fan of clowns either
‘I used to have nightmares about a clown in a supermarket, and then he would start tickling me. I used to wake up in a cold sweat. It really felt like someone was tickling me, until I couldn’t take any more. It wasn’t even funny. It was horrible.’

    She don’t need no education
‘I got private tuition, with the Sugababes, when I was 14. Our teacher used to say “If you guys don’t wanna work, you don’t have to.” We went to Paris on an “educational” trip, to all these theme parks – she took us and her kids. It was only when we were just about to take our GCSEs and we hadn’t learned anything that it all came out. We ended up not taking our GCSEs. So thank God for it working out with Sugababes, I can tell you.’
