At a time when the term ‘folk’ is bandied around so readily, a compilation like this is a timely reminder of its essential qualities. Like the Delta blues or Southern murder ballads, British folk should have an otherworldly spook to it – and the artists reworking Waterson’s songs here do so with tenderness and heart. From King Creosote to James Yorkston and Vashti Bunyan, not a note is wasted; particularly compelling is Victoria Williams’ haunting ‘Red Wine Promises’, which creaks like an un-oiled gate.
