This Londoner’s brilliant debut on Def Jam raised the bar for UK nu-soul and earned her a Mercury nomination. The patchy follow-up ‘L.O.V.E’ saw her label fly her to the US to try and turn her into a Mary J/Mariah/Beyoncé clone. LP number three is a return to what she does best: jazz-edged R&B with a Brit-funk edge and a vestigial UK garage twitch, recorded with the likes of Jason Yarde and Alex The Kid. Think Anita Baker and Angie Stone with a Timbaland swagger and you’re nearly there.
