Jake Fairley may have grown up on Toronto’s skate and indie-rock scene, but it’s techno that’s always tickled his fancy. He’s recorded a staggering number of records (many of them for the über-cool Kompakt label) but his favoured solo project is Fairmont, whose second LP this is. Imagine the minimal techno of Mr Oizo dusted with Colder’s icy romanticism, then filtered through pastoral glitch, ambient prog, art-trance and krautish drone-rock. The result is the most eloquent and imaginative ‘dance record’ you’ll hear this year.
