  • The third offering from Chicago’s The Autumn Defense (the third side project of Wilco instrumentalists John Stirratt and Pat Sansone) is not a cool record. This is immediately clear from opener ‘Canyon Arrow’, which has a flute motif and a line about ‘the song of the silent sparrow’. What it is, from Stirratt’s sun-dappled vocals to Sansone’s warm instrumental layers, is soft rock at its most elegant. Not the most arresting quality, perhaps, but rarer than you’d think.
