This third album from Oakland’s outsider hip hop explorer Yoni Wolf is the spookiest exposition yet of an agile mind that links a rogue pebble in his sock to heartbreak and failing democracy. It sounds implausible
and a little silly but, as Wolf displays in his singsong emo-rap, it’s entertaining, if a little unsettling to hear his mind ticking over like this. Backed by urban, beats-y Americana, this is abstract nu-folk at its best.

All my mates who like good music hate this CD - I think it's because it lacks any constant uniform rock-type rhythm running through, unlike say REM or Dylan or Ali Farka Toure. However I love it, the lyrics are intriging and there is a beat there (sometimes) though it changes with each track. With this band (Why?) the lyrics and melody are up front, and that doesn't always sell these days. It's my record of the year so far!
