Malcolm Middleton is almost cripplingly modest. He’s also one of the best songwriters we have, serving up sharp meditations on love and loneliness from an aching heart with nowhere to hide. ‘Love Comes In Waves’ is a brittle plea for constancy, ‘Blue Plastic Bags’ an AA-meeting in song form, and his minor chord cover of Madonna’s ‘Stay’ one of the most starkly affecting things we’ve ever heard. Top folky finger-picking, too.
