Kasai Allstars are even better than their forebears, Konono No 1. Like their fellow Congolese collective, KA tap and bang on junkyard percussion, building heavy, bewitching trances. But these grooves have a psychedelic seam; not that unexpected given the album’s full title, ‘In the 7th Moon, The Chief Turned Into A Swimming Fish And Ate The Head Of His Enemy By Magic’. With smoky riffs, shamanic funk and a fuzzbox sound that recalls US psych-garage bands, KA are part of an impressive Venn diagram.
