However conceptual the records of San Francisco’s digital surrealists Matmos become, they manage to remain playful and inclusive rather than alienating and self-indulgent. This series of ‘sound portraits’ of gay icons (ranging from Joe Meek to King Ludwig II of Bavaria) is consistently thought-provoking, funky and fun. It’s sound-sources include Drew Daniel crying out in pain after being burned and MC Schmidt shaving his head. What’s not to like?
