The avant-garde label Thirsty Ear has rekindled the age-old love affair between jazz and hip hop, pairing weirdy downtown NY improvisers with leftfield rappers. This LP puts drummer Hamid Drake and bassist William Parker alongside Antipop Consortium MC-producer Beans, who concentrates on highly textured beats (à la Prefuse 73), leaving the rhythm section to lay down orthodox hard bop loops. It kicks into life on the rare occasions where Beans actually raps, but there is some rhythmic brilliance en route.
