With more side projects on the go than Norman Foster Associates, Costello’s latest outing is a live album recorded in The Hague with the Metropole Orkest at 2004’s North Sea Jazz Festival. That tells you much of what you need to know about this occasionally diverting but often unmemorable record. A Fender-free EC can be a captivating and inspirational spirit (witness the often brilliant collaboration with Burt Bacharach) but Costello’s high points have always been sparked by electricity. More to the point: how much does anyone need a scat-jazz version of ‘Watching The Detectives’ in their life?
