Possibly the first in a Tupac-style deluge of posthumous albums from the late and legendary Malian guitarist (indeed, Ali’s last licks are slated to appear on his son Vieux Farka Touré’s debut album, released this autumn). Ali’s last solo outing features all the usual clippety-cloppety beats, hypnotic ngoni orchestrations and desert blues riffs, but the best tracks see funk tenorist Pee Wee Ellis and harmonica player Little George Sueref lending a haunting, dub-like quality. ‘Hanana’ is terrifyingly spooky, but the guest slot from Damon Albarn’s pal Afel Boucoum on the final track serves as blissful farewell card. RIP.
