Dreadlocked singer Mapfumo was one of the cheerleaders for Zimbabwean independence 25 years ago, but was also one of the first musicians to turn on Mugabe’s increasingly brutal regime. ‘Rise Up’ is a characteristic mix of shona spirit music, hypnotic marimba, Johnny Marr-ish jit-jive guitar and Stax-style horns, but also shows he’s the best exponent of that often awful genre of African reggae.
