Most ‘hotly tipped’ new acts tend to be selected and collated by the cut of hair and trouser as much as by musical ability. Tapes ’N Tapes defy current tipping trends, being neither thin white kooks in girls’ jeans or electro-appropriating punks. Rather, they make an instantly familiar melange of angular countryfied rock in the Pixies/Modest Mouse mould, but with added flute, brass and kitchen sink. Despite the weirdness of some of their ideas, the whole mess holds tight, mostly thanks to some killer jump-up-and-down festival-anthem choruses.
