Just when you were ready to write off the US jazz tradition as a museum piece, along comes altoist Garrett with a tumultuous slice of modal jazz straight out of the McCoy Tyner school. There’s a strong Eastern influence: Coltrane-ish ballad ‘Realization’ features sampled Tibetan chants; the arresting ‘Tsunami Song’ strings, harp and a two-stringed Chinese fiddle. Drummer Brian Blade and ferocious ex-Trane sax legend Pharoah Sanders ensure that things crackle with energy.
