An ECM-like offering from spidery guitarist Frissell, the downtown New Yorker whose tangy, textured guitar style postulates an alternate America where the lonesome cowboy played jazz. He’s joined here by Miles Davis bassist Ron Carter and drummer Paul Motian in a chamber jazz meeting of equals, exploring Monk, Miles and some unlikely standards (‘You Are My Sunshine’, ‘Pretty Polly’). If it lacks the hurtling intensity of last year’s magical ‘East/West’ and is initially slow to unfurl its magic, hang on in there. It’s worth it.
