Earlier Brazilian ‘baile funk’ was a hilariously hyperactive hybrid of ’90s rave, Miami bass, grime, bhangra and crap ’80s synth pop with deranged MCs barking at you in Portuguese. This latest collection retains such sonic chaos, but also applies the same munchkin-voiced sampling technology to rootsier source material – samba drums, berimbaus, carnival brass bands and forro accordions. This is probably the last great collection before the whole scene gets hijacked by notions of ‘authenticity’.
