This proggy Swedish acoustic piano trio have become hugely successful and influential with their hook-laden, Bach-inspired ambient jazz, which recalls Keith Jarrett produced by Brian Eno. They eschew jazz improvisation in favour of intense melodic development, with a squalling, amplified bowed bass bringing a rocky edge to their music. This album features the catchiness and the powerful rhythmic devices that we’ve become used to from EST, but it’s all too artfully constructed to engage us emotionally.
