If you think flamenco is for tourists, think again. In the hands of a master it is still Europe’s most compelling folk music and Estrella Morente is flamenco royalty. Her old man is singer Enrique Morente; her husband one of Spain’s greatest matadors; and her song ‘Volver’ (included here) graces Pedro Almódovar’s latest film. Blessed with an evocative (almost Arabic) voice and accompanied by handclaps, percussion and acoustic guitar, this isn’t trendy beat-driven ‘nuevo flamenco’ but the blood-drenched, soul-churning real thing.
