Although it’s been bubbling under locally for a couple of years, you may not have heard of the San Fran-based hip hop scene known as hyphy. This new ‘joint’ from hyphy linchpin MC E-40 is, if not the ‘Sgt Pepper’ of the genre, at least its ‘Definitely Maybe’. As its name suggests (it’s short for ‘hyperactive’) hyphy is a wild style boasting big beats and jumpy rhymes, kind of like a California crunk. Maybe a little minimal for some tastes, but it sounds great on a massive stereo.
