Ninja Tune imprint Big Dada remains the home for the best UK hip hop (like Roots Manuva, Gamma, and the utterly bonkers Infinite Livez), and the third LP from Mercury nominee Ty is a noble addition to this canon. But despite Ty’s bass-heavy beats, jazz-funk samples, ’80s synth stabs, English-accented rhymes, Afrobeat touches and stabs at dark political satire, ‘Closer’ still remains something of a chore, leaving you desperate to dig out your Missy Elliott albums or your old grime compilations.
