  • Yodelling – the art of warbling between a full-throated ‘chest voice’ and a falsetto ‘head voice’ – isn’t just the province of Swiss goatherds. This compilation takes us from Appalachian hillbilly song (Gillian Welch) to Tuvan throat singers (Sainkho Namtchylak); from Cameroon’s pygmies (Baka Beyond) to Bollywood playback singers (Kishore Kumar), yodelling all the way. We could well do without the dubby techno yodelling of Christine Lauterburg, however.

This is an excellent example of world-wide yodeling. Mike Johnson, on track-14 has recently had his Yodel Song Archives included in the Library of Congress' Recorded Sound Reference Center's permanent collection. Johnson has written over 100 yodeling songs.

... and we could do well without the snubby techno snobbery of John Lewis, too. Anyone who can get hold of a copy of CL's brilliant Echo der Zeit (highly unlikely) will attest to the shallowness of this remark...
