This Chicago pianist and singer’s status as a ‘proper jazz musician’ can certainly alienate potential fans – the kind of people who’d probably warm to her brooding funk noir – and, in an attempt to alienate them further, she’s written this 11-track suite based on Ovid’s ‘Metamorpheses’, an opaque, post-rock-tinged piece of music theatre that recalls Portishead, Robert Wyatt, Joni Mitchell, Henry Cow and Joanna Newsom. Beginners should dig out her last album ‘Live: A Fortnight In France’, this is a drop of the hard stuff.
