A collaborative effort from cultish US ‘power ambient’ outfit Sunn O))) and Japanese sludge-rock trio Boris, this is an hour's worth of pitch-dark doom metal, a thrillingly monolithic slab of extended, trance-like drones and heavy psych rock workouts on seriously down-tuned bass that shifts sonic physicality into another dimension. Guests Kim Thayil (ex Soundgarden) and Joe Preston (Earth, Melvins) help forge real beauty out of the blackness, however. Just how much more black could ‘Altar’ be? None. None more black.
