The tunes now thought of as ‘porn film music’ came from a European take on the beat sound, informed by jazz, swing and even oompah, as this compilation from crack German indie Marina shows.
Some of the songs here sound dated, which isn’t surprising, but some are catchy, if amusingly freaky (Hazy Oserwald Jet Set’s ‘Swinging London’), and other tracks sound scarily contemporary, such as Hildegard Knef’s excellent ‘Holiday Time’, a super cool bit of modernist pop which makes Nico sound positively loquacious.
