  • Born in Lisbon to Cape Verdean parents and raised by a Portuguese mother, Tavares sings about displacement and hybridity, revisiting her Cape Verdean roots (the coladeira made famous by Cesaria Evora) while dipping into Angolan semba, Nigerian Afrobeat and Brazilian bossa. But these are organic fusions, grounded by accessible acoustic songcraft that should ensure that she joins fellow Portuguese divas Lura and Mariza in the crossover racks.
