Congolese rumba has not only been profoundly influential on early rock ’n’ roll, calypso and the dance music of Cuba, but it’s also been influenced by Western pop, leading to a weird hall-of-mirrors effect. So this two-CD set of 40 ancient tracks, curated by Vincent Kenis from the Afro-futurist outfit Congotronics, is like entering a rupture in the space/time continuum, where the sweet vocal harmonies, Johnny Marr-ish guitar vamps, clumsy horn arrangements and clippety-cloppety beats sound oddly familiar.
