One of the unsung heroes of British jazz, Surman’s melodic explorations of folk-influenced themes have long been a mainstay of the ECM label. This fine anthology brings together four early-’70s sessions for the Dawn label: a coruscating trio wig-out with bassist Barre Phillips and drummer Stu Martin; a fearsome, electro-tinged duo with Martin; and a monumental session with guitarist John McLaughlin and bassist Dave Holland that prefigures the Mahivishnu Orchestra.
