You might imagine there’d be nothing new anyone could possibly bring to the ‘Pet Sounds’ party, but this motley bunch of guests have managed some genuinely revolutionary overhauling: the Oldham Brothers turn ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’ into a darkly hesitant bit of barbershop alt country; Daniel Johnston’s off-key vocal works to terribly touching effect on ‘God Only Knows’ and Patrick Wolf remakes ‘I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times’ as an exotic instrumental. Happily, reverence hobbles nobody here.
