Though embraced by the folk establishment (her previous CD won Best Album at the BBC Folk Awards) Polwart’s joyful songwriting has more in common with her pop and alt.country sisters. Her vocals are placed high in the mix over inventive arrangements, and her occasionally wistful lyrics don’t shirk serious subjects (sex trafficking in ‘Maybe There’s A Road’, for example). Polwart’s skill is to make these deeply personal tales utterly universal.
