  • ‘It’ll change your life’ said Natalie Portman’s character of The Shins’ song ‘New Slang’ in Zach Braff’s film ‘Garden State’. This plug changed The Shins’ lives massively, unexpectedly heaping expectation on this third album. James Mercer’s gift for a killer chord change and melody  surfaces strongly (particularly on the Ian McCulloch-esque ‘Phantom Limb’) and, while it’s not exactly a record that will redefine your existence, ‘Wincing…’ will at least provide it with a satisfyingly quirky melodic soundtrack.
