Since his expulsion from The Velvet Underground in 1968, avant-garde icon John Cale has released a vast and varied array of solo albums – so vast and varied, in fact, that only the truly devoted could have the time and patience to sift through all of them. Happily then, this lengthy live set collects some of his career highlights – from the Velvets’ ‘Venus In Furs’, to Jonathan Richman’s ‘Pablo Picasso’ (the original version of which was produced by Cale), to ‘Woman’ (from 2005’s ‘Black Acetate’) – and presents them in revamped live format. The result is a brilliant record that serves as both a retrospective and a new, cohesive whole.
