The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse Epic, so-called ‘experimental’ post-rock (read: ‘long, with quiet bits leading into dead loud bits’. Or, alternatively: ‘a bit like Mogwai’) may be commonplace these days, but few are the bands that manage to make this genre interesting to anyone beyond weed-addled student types. Enter stage left, criminally overlooked Montrealians The Besnard Lakes and this, their second album. Ominous titles aside (‘Disaster’, ‘Devastation’), this is a record that adds some complex and intricate touches (not to mention actual songs) to your standard issue feedback crescendo, like, awesomeness. Probably does sound ace when you’re stoned, but – crucially – sounds pretty special when you’re not, too.
