One of the great torch singers, Williams brings almost-unbearable
pathos to her latest collection of lost-love songs, by turns throatily
despairing, ‘I can’t find my joy anywhere’ and raging, ‘You didn’t even
make me/Come on’ against a world that’s wronged her, again. The
atmosphere can be relentless, but Williams livens things up with
shifting styles, rocking on, folking up and, er, rapping (endearingly
badly) when the mood strikes. Superb.
