Outstanding work from the oft-forgotten woman of grown-up ‘acceptable country’, Griffin’s sharp voice has never shown more depth as she flits between country, folk, blues and gospel, channelling the spirits of Kate Bush (‘Burgundy Shoes’) and Chrissie Hynde (‘Getting Ready’), soulfully accompanying Ian ‘Small Faces’ McLagan’s gentle piano (‘Heavenly Day’) and dueting with Emmylou Harris on ‘Trapeze’, the most sublime song we’ve heard for a long time. Simply stunning.
