If James Murphy and his Soundsystem colleagues ran the UN, the idea of a ‘global clash of ideologies’ would be a good thing. The group are best known for shoving 50 years of rock ’n’ roll, disco, punk, techno, electro and zydeco in a sack and recording them either fighting or fucking.
There’s a noticeably poppier edge to this eagerly awaited new album; there’s evidence of pop song structures and real singing instead of the usual drawled moans. This is not at the expense of the visceral thrills – opener ‘Get Innocuous’ has drums BAe could sell to Saudi Arabia – but the uplifting chorus of ‘Us Vs Them’ is possibly the best thing they’ve ever done.
It’s the album your bass boost was designed for – for once, something genuinely outstanding is going to be massive.
