  • Formerly one third of fine leftfield hip hop crew Company Flow and founder of the Definitive Jux label (it was Def Jux until Def Jam poked its nose in), El-P has yet to put an innovative foot wrong. The competition (Atmosphere, Cage et al) may be there, but on this evidence has little hope of catching up. With a guest list including The Mars Volta, Matt Sweeney, Cat Power and half the Def Jux roster, ‘I’ll Sleep…’ delivers punishing beats, moody, heavily textured soundscapes and killer rhymes. Dark, urgent and often thrillingly threatening, it’s turbulent as the times it clearly reflects.
