It may or not be true that Ann Arbor, MI emigrés Awesome Color grew up around the corner from drummer Scott Asheton and learned their instruments from him, but there’s no denying The Stooges’ raw power runs through the trio like static in an acrylic wig. It’s hardly surprising that Thurston Moore so liked what he heard he signed them to his own label, since ‘Free Man’ suggests Neil Young guesting with Sonic Youth. Elsewhere, the spirits of Sabbath, The Who and Steppenwolf help kick up a righteous, maxi-fuzzed hoodoo.
