Fields’ first single (the not-very-imaginatively-titled ‘Song For The Fields’) was actually one of the finest records released by anyone last year. Mixing My Bloody Valentine-esque soundscapery with a kind of country-rock grit, it sounded both unique and beautiful, with the good news now being that their debut album follows suit – both sonically and in terms of quality. Highlights include the unashamedly grandiose ‘Feathers’ and the… well, unashamedly grandiose ‘Schoolbooks’, with the overall feel here one of a band that have – at last – done something fresh with the whole ‘epic indie’-‘post-rock’-‘let’s be Mogwai’ thing.
