The founder of influential indie label K, Johnson also formed numerous bands, including Beat Happening and The Halo Benders. Here he revisits his bulging back catalogue with a new band, culled from other K outfits, to knock some sense into his often primitive material.Thanks to the gentle, intricate arrangements of his respectful bandmates, Johnson’s deep, hard-edged voice sounds less willfully Richman-goes-basso profundo than usual. The general effect comes across like the ‘Walk The Line’ soundtrack, had the movie been directed by Ed Wood.
