Hyphy is the new post-crunk party strain of hip hop, typified by its minimal arrangements, spooky beats and nonsense lyrics. This album is a K-Tel style round-up of the scene’s major players. It’s an impressive enough line-up, but listened to in one sitting you can’t help but feel you’re hearing some sort of hip hop Jive Bunny mastermix. As amusing as hyphy’s slang lexicon is, you can’t help but think they should perhaps spend a bit less time making up new words and a bit more time making up new tunes. Still, the likes of Mac Dre’s ‘Feeling Myself’ and The Team’s ‘Hyphy Juice’ will certainly make your party ‘totally stupid’ (that’s a hyphy compliment by the way).
