Pity poor Schnauss, holed up as a kid in Kiel, Germany, which he’s declared ‘the most boring, ugly place in the world’. It must be this spiritual poverty that resulted in his long-lived love affair with the blissed-out pop works of Cocteau Twins, Ride and Slowdive, with Tangerine Dream’s proto-ambient house and The Orb’s Balearic chill-out. His third LP balances songs with atmospherics and there are some nice head-rush moments, but Schnauss could do with a bit of the Valentines’ furious white noise here to add some edge.
