Scouse rocker in ‘quite retro’ shocker! We shouldn’t be surprised that the second album from this former Stairs man has a vintage feel; the shock is just which vintage. The clanging garage of ‘The Way It Is’ is a red herring, for tonight Jones wants to party like it’s 1955, coming on like a Wallasey Willie Mabon on self-penned stompers like ‘Necessary Evil’. Maximum R&B with none of the picnic-blanket civility of Jools Holland: keep up with the Joneses and buy it now.
