Aside from QOTSA, only Foo Fighters are both major league and sufficiently alt-rock credible to figure. Their speciality is the sleek, high-sheen, but slightly grungey anthem, as perfect a melding of MOR pop, metal, ’70s hard rock and post-hardcore as is imaginable. Their sixth LP taps Led Zeppelin, REO Speedwagon, Badfinger and Steely Dan (really) and has us mentally barrelling down an LA freeway in a convertible, slugging frosty brewskis. Go right ahead and sneer. The Foos rock.
