The most interesting live music venue in south-east London brings together the character and prices of an old-school pub with the amenities of a modern music venue: there's an up-to-date sound system, an upstairs arts space, a walled-off garden for smokers and a drinks licence that runs until 3am.
Events include Friday's party-hearty Whip It! night ('pretension-free good tunes with recession-crunching cheap entry,' promises the website, which sounds about right) and shows from assorted live acts (everything from electro to ska), but it doesn't take over the entire pub: it's altogether calmer earlier in the week.
Food extends to burgers, sandwiches and, on Sundays, roast lunches; the clientele usually includes a healthy number of students escaping from their studies at nearby Goldsmiths College.
