More music venue than pub but a dandy place for a drink nonetheless, the hippy-dippy and completely darling Windmill spreads over a large space down a sidestreet off Brixton Hill. Much of it is playground, covered with festival seating and regularly occupied by muso types smoking roll-ups or dodging the attentions of the rather frantic dog.
Inside, beneath a sign with the venue's name in flowery writing, is a dark, often crowded, low-ceilinged room with intimate seating as you enter, a large and completely overworked bar (bohemians, like death and taxes, will always be with us) and, at the far end, a low stage that hosts a constant string of scruffy, good-natured rock and Americana acts. You may not be able to see them, but the bar holds taps of San Miguel, Red Stripe and, perhaps surprisingly, Marston's Pedigree; ask for wine, though, and you'll get it.
